complaining about Telefonica

The last thing I wanted to do this Saturday night was spend several hours writing, editing, and typing this letter. However, I needed to do it, because it's definitely the best way to arraign Telefonica at the tribunal of public opinion. Let's review the errors in Telefonica's statements in order. First, Telefonica should do some research next time before printing half-truths and misinformation. Imagine a world in which Telefonica could cause one-sided politics to be entered into historical fact whenever it felt like it. To reiterate the main message of this letter, Telefonica is intellectually dishonest in everything it says and does.

AMD, ATI and Linux

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/07/24/technology/24cnd-semi.html?ex=1311393600&en=6d32a4722187011e&ei=5088&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss

From a Linux user point of view, I am very pleased to see that ATI will now be part of AMD. I also like to think that Linux had something to do with the decision of AMD to acquire ATI.

If AMD is brave enough, they will follow the route started by Intel:

http://www.figuiere.net/hub/blog/?2006/07/21/425-desktop-developer-conference-and-ols

Intel is committed to official provide day 0 Open Source Linux support by providing Open Source drivers AND documentation for their chipsets, wifi and graphics. It is something that is now part of the engineering process: that sounds like very good news. Now, one can wonder why there are rumors about AMD merging with ATI. AMD is in a situation where they don't have a real Open Source solution due to lack of graphics chipset (beside the Geode-chipset that is 2D only).

Desalinating water in Barcelona

This new installation will produce 60 hm3/year. I think that the proper technology can alleviate the current water supply problems that coastal cities are having...

---

http://mediambient.gencat.net/cat/el_departament/sala_de_premsa/notes/NPDESSALADORA.jsp?ComponentID=111070&SourcePageID=593#1

define: Cambridge

Cambridge gets its name from the ancient bridge over the River Cam. It is a very old city. The university dates back to 1209 when students fled from Oxford?s violence and established a new university here. There are thirty-one colleges in the university, and some of them have magnificent old buildings, the most famous being the chapel at Kings College.

Trying Google Earth with Xgl

It's kind of funny that Google Earth on Ubuntu Dapper works on my laptop with the NVIDIA card only if I am using Xgl. The only small hickup is some very occasional flickering of the screen.

Everything else works quite well. I even got to download the kml file from Le Tour du France, and got to see how difficult is to climb l'Alpe Duez...

All in all, very enjoyable :p

House, Car, Food, Travel and...

...luxury goods.

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3977056095079010346&q=Forbes.com+Video+Network

Now I am not a fan of Forbes, but I liked this guy, Michael Silverstein, being interviewed.

In my case:

- I don't own a house.

- I don't own a car nor have a driving license.

- I have a startling love affair with Sainsbury's basics. People who have followed the second season of "Lost" know what I mean.

- Travel is something I still have to think about. My flight-carbon-emission fears are a good start...

So I guess I have to start finding my luxury good for being "a normal consumer" :)

Tomtom, where am I?

I have to confess I have a big problem with my sense of orientation. I don't have it. I guess in a couple hundred years someone will take a look at a newborn's genome and say: "oh, look, this lad won't have a sense of orientation. His sense-of-orientation genes are totally borked!". Well, this is me.

I mean, Cambridge (UK) is a relatively small city. It has a city centre and a more or less concentric structure. Well, after having spent almost a year here, I still find it really difficult to find my way in it.

To the point that before I go to a barbecue, or to a shop somebody recommended me, I go to maps.google.co.uk and I draw the map to a paper so that I don't get lost.

The most annoying thing is when you have to give indications to someone else when I am being driven home:

Driver: "So, where do you leave?"

Me: "I leave at *bzzzzz* street. It is near *bzzzz* street."

Driver: "Ermmm, ok. Do I take *bzzzz* or *bzzzz* to get there?"

Me: "Ehemm, I don't know. If you reach *bzzzz* street and drive slowly from there on, I may manage to indicate you how to reach my place. By the way, are you in a hurry?"

----

So, today I found out about this great thing: tomtom

It is a company that produces navitation systems:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TomTom_%28company%29

The TomTom Navigator is like God's given solution for people like me that have absolute-zero sense of orientation.

I am thinking on buying a smartphone and TomTom Mobile so that I can live the rest of my life easily without this little nuisance, me being "Lost" all the time, bothering me.

Yippy ya yeeee!!

``I'm not going to say we're going to $100 a barrel right away, but neither am I going to rule it out,'' said Peter Beutel, the president of Cameron Hanover Inc., a New Canaan, Connecticut, energy consultant. ``If events drag Iran into the situation and it deteriorates to the point that they want to block the Straits of Hormuz, and we get a hurricane, yes, we will see $100.''

Crude oil for August delivery rose as much as $1.70, or 2.2 percent, to $78.40 a barrel in after-hours electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. It was at $77.38 at 11:50 a.m. in London, about 28 percent rise so far this year.

Billionaire Buffet donates $37bn to charity

The most of his vast personal fortune is to be given to the Bill Gates' charitable foundation. Some may wonder if it is not a bit of a disappointment to give all this money to charity when you haven't been doing much else in your life than accumulating it. I actually think it is the last link in the chain that makes the world round. It is like the Greek circle of life: you spend your life trying to be good at something, producing to earn for yourself and your child, and then give the money you won't need to charity.

Mr. Buffett, the Omaha investor who ranks fourth on the Forbes magazine list of the richest Americans, said in an interview that he had not signed the petition itself because he thought it did not go far enough in defending "the critical role" that he said the estate tax played in promoting economic growth, by helping create a society in which success is based on merit rather than inheritance.

Mr. Buffett said repealing the estate tax "would be a terrible mistake," the equivalent of "choosing the 2020 Olympic team by picking the eldest sons of the gold-medal winners in the 2000 Olympics."

"We would regard that as absolute folly in terms of athletic competition," he said.

"We have come closer to a true meritocracy than anywhere else around the world," he said. "You have mobility so people with talents can be put to the best use. Without the estate tax, you in effect will have an aristocracy of wealth, which means you pass down the ability to command the resources of the nation based on heredity rather than merit."

Atrichoke Hearts

After about... hmmm, four months and a half in Cambridge, I finally discovered the truth: there _are_ frozen artichoke hearts to be bought in bags of 500gr at Waitrose. With this little secret unveiled, I don't know what else can happen from now on...

Former Enron CEO Kenneth Lay dies

Kenneth Lay, or "Kenny Boy", unexpectedly ended at his vacation home in Aspen, Colorado. Lay was scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 23, to face up to 45 years in prison.

Over elections in Mexico

I have the feeling that all developing countries will start to have this issue with tight election votes, always favouring the right wing parties, since the Information Technologies make it easy to control the results of the ballots in a more "designed" manner.

Mexico is the last example, but other cases have been seen in East Europe. And on top of all, the last US elections: I mean, come on! The United States of America shouldn't have this kind of events in its history books.
